What causes cracks in brick walls and mortar?
Cracks in your brickwork are caused by incorrectly laid foundations that are susceptible to ground movement. Ground movement is caused by things such as moisture, drought, or tree roots but well laid foundations should not be affected by these things.
Around Perth, more modern buildings commonly have cracks or damage resulting from badly placed vertical breaks in the brickwork (control joints). Repairing these joints can become a costly exercise if not done properly, as the cracking will reappear and affect even more of the brickwork if not properly repaired and reinforced.
How do Brick and Mortar Restorations repair cracked brickwork?
When we at Brick and Mortar Restorations in Perth perform building restoration we use a system of brick removal that minimises the disruption to the brick walling. We build in a reinforcement through those horizontal mortar joints using the advanced Helifix repair system. Where possible, we will reinforce to 500mm each side of the brick or mortar cracking, thereby strengthening the brickwork to a point that will require much more significant movement for the cracking to reappear in those locations. Utilising our expertise in the repointing of brickwork mortar joints, we then repoint the cracks with a matching mortar as near to the existing colour and finish. We pride ourselves on our reputation for quality and reliability and will endeavour to repair your brickwork to a standard that will ensure it remains sound for years to come.
