They have stood quietly for more than 100 years on the road that runs down to Fremantle from the old traffic bridge.

In recent times they have become rather sad and run down but the historic Gunners' Cottages are about to get a new lease of life. Defence Housing Australia has started work on a project to restore the 10 heritage-listed cottages on Queen Victoria Street. Completed in 1913-14, the modest cottages were originally home to officers of the adjacent artillery barracks, which is now the Army Museum.

They were home to many defence personnel over the years but have been empty and in various stages of disrepair for more than a decade. Six new dwellings will be added to the existing 10 cottages at the site and they will once again become home to defence personnel and their families. DHA managing director Peter Howman said the cottages served as an important reminder of the historic coastal defence of the port of Fremantle and remained a valued part of its heritage.

Brick and Mortar Restoration commenced work on the Gunners Cottages in April 2015. We are now coming to the end of our contract and we are so proud of our team who have worked on this Project.

The works involved with this Project have been quite extensive with paint removal, graffiti removal, concrete cancer, lintel replacements, tuckpointing, mortar pointing, crack repairs and limestone repointing.
